Somerset has everything, endless countryside, dramatic moorland, the Somerset Levels, a stunning coast with numerous long sandy beaches and many parts recognized as areas of outstanding natural beauty. The county is also the home of great cider and delectable cheese, providing a great taste of the West Country.
Somerset has a fascinating wealth of heritage and legends. King Arthur’s Cadbury Castle (a reputed site of Camelot) lies in the South of the county, West Somerset has Exmoor with vast areas of heathland, ancient woods and the home of Lorna Doone. Somerset also holds many traditions, one of which being the making of wicker baskets dating back hundreds of years.
If you are visiting or reside in The Exmoor areas such as Minehead, Watchet, Dunster and Wellington, you can choose to fly from the closest launch sites of Taunton or Tiverton (or any others if you wish!) and passengers coming from Bridgwater and the surrounding areas are equidistant to Taunton and Castle Carey. Also nearby to Castle Carey is Street, Shepton Mallet, Wells, Burnham-On-Sea and Brean – why not tie in a visit to Wookey Hole too! Yeovil, Martock and the surrounding villages can step over the border to Dorset to fly from Henstridge near Templecombe or indeed Castle Carey and Taunton – take your pick!
Balloon Flights in Somerset meet at Taunton and Castle Cary and generally fly within the Wellington / Ilminster / Wincanton / Glastonbury and Quantocks area.
Taunton: Situated on the banks of the River Tone. This is a busy traditional market town and the capital of Somerset. The town has many striking buildings including Taunton Castle, the Municipal Hall and the church of St Mary Magdalene.
With a flight in the Taunton area you are likely to see the Vale of Taunton full of orchards, lush hedgerows, narrow lanes, hamlets and willows growing along the ditches and streams. Taunton flights have views stretching across Bridgwater, Wellington and the Blackdown, Quantock & Brendon Hills reaching up to Exmoor.
Castle Cary: An attractive market town with picturesque cottages made from the local golden ham stone. In the 19th century the town was known for its horsehair weaving and is today home of the only horsehair manufacturer in the country.
